FRUIT LOGISTICA and BIOFACH 2026: BREADCRUMB on the Ground
For the third time, the EU-funded project BREADCRUMB was present at two of the most influential trade fairs in the agri-food sector: FRUIT LOGISTICA and BIOFACH 2026.
Both events provided an excellent platform for open, constructive dialogue and valuable exchanges around a pressing challenge in the food system: food waste driven by marketing standards.
Our partner Lehmann Natur engaged with industry stakeholders, retailers, and project partners, discussing how aesthetic and commercial specifications can unintentionally contribute to the disposal of perfectly edible produce. The conversations once again demonstrated strong sector-wide interest in the topic and confirmed the urgency of developing practical, market-oriented solutions.
The message was clear: Addressing food waste linked to marketing standards requires collaboration across the value chain. Through initiatives like BREADCRUMB, we are working to generate evidence-based approaches that support resource conservation and more sustainable marketing practices.

Next Step: Pilot Test on Yellow Limes
In April, Lehmann Natur will launch a pilot test in selected retail stores, introducing the sale of yellow limes , a product often rejected due to appearance despite meeting quality and safety standards.
This pilot will provide concrete market data and consumer insights, contributing to BREADCRUMB’s broader objective of identifying viable pathways for integrating suboptimal products into mainstream retail.
We look forward to sharing the results and lessons learned.
