Trust, Transparency and Food Waste: BREADCRUMB Joins FOODGUARD Roundtable Discussion
On 14 May 2026, the BREADCRUMB project participated in an interactive roundtable discussion organized together with the FOODGUARD project, bringing experts together to explore the relationship between food waste, consumer trust, transparency, and the acceptance of suboptimal food.
The online session created a joint discussion space to exchange perspectives on how innovation, communication, and consumer perceptions influence food-related decisions across the value chain.
Representing BREADCRUMB, project coordinator Dr. Anna Twarogowska shared insights into the role of food marketing standards, consumer behaviour, and the factors shaping the acceptance of suboptimal food. Joining the discussion from FOODGUARD, Dr. Chrysoula Tassou highlighted challenges and solutions related to food integrity, safety, and waste reduction through innovation.
The roundtable addressed several key questions, including:
- How trust affects consumer willingness to consume “imperfect” food
- The role of labelling, information, and digital tools in food waste prevention
- How mistrust can contribute to unnecessary food discard
- Opportunities for EU projects to collaborate on more sustainable and resilient food systems
The discussion highlighted the importance of combining transparency, innovation, and consumer engagement to reduce food waste while improving trust throughout the food chain.
